PIERRE JAMET
21 avril 1893 - 17 juin 1991

Having studied music with his mother from the age of 10, Pierre Jamet was a pianist as well as a harpist. In 1906 he entered the Conservatory to study under Mrs Tassu-Spencer. There, he decided to give up the chromatic harp (Pleyel) and to undertake the pedal harp (Erard) with Alphonse Hasselmans, whose fierce disciplin earned Jamet's great admiration. In 1912, Pierre Jamet earned his Premier Prix.

P.Jamet 1933In 1913, he joined the Orchestra of the Parisian "Théâtre des Champs Elysées" under the direction of Inghelbrecht. His career as a soloist began in 1917. Encouraged by Debussy, who wanted to hear his Sonata for Flute, Alto and Harp on an Erard pedal harp, Pierre Jamet premiered this work on the 9th of March, 1917. In 1920, he was named harpist of the Lamoureux Concerts, and two years later performed his first recital in Paris. This year also saw the foundation of the "Quinten Instrumental de Paris" which later became the "Quintette Pierre Jamet" in 1945 (flute, string trio and harp)
Between 1922 and 1940, Pierre Jamet led a world-wide career as a soloist and chamber musician. From 1936 to 1959, he was harp solo at the Paris Opera, from 1936 to 1938 he was active in the Concerts Pasdeloup, and from 1938 to 1949 in the Concerts Column. He was professor of harp at the Paris Conservatory from 1948 to 1963. In 1962, he founded the
International Association of Harpists and Friends of the Harp of which he was president. Thanks to his love of teaching, French harp music is able to live on through the school of harp which he founded in 1964 (Summer courses of the International Academy at Gargiless), the Festival of Gargilesse (which has taken place every year since 1968), and the International Harp Contest founded by him in 1977 (Contest Marie-Antoinette Cazala) which took place every 3 years until 1991.(*)

Pierre Jamet was behind the creation of many new works for harp, paritcularly for his quintet. His daughter Marie-Claire Jamet, also professor at the Paris Conservatory in 1984 and soloist in the "Ensemble Interconteporain", as well as his many pupils, ensure that the Art of Pierre Jamet endures.
Among Pierre Jamet's pupils, many great pedagogues and international soloists can be cited: Fabrice Pierre, Frédérique Cambreling, Catherine Michel, Bernard Galais (his 1st pupil), Martine Géliot, Gisèle Herbert, Corinne Le Du, Marie-Madeleine Bouchaud, Ghislaine Petit, Brigitte Sylvestre, Annie Fontaine, Françoise Netter...in France, Suzanna Mildonian, Anna-Maria Loro...in Italy, Catherine Eisenhoffer ...in Swizerland, Yvette Colignon, Annie Lavoisier, Arielle Valibouse... in Belgium, Carl Swanson in U.S.A., Ernestine Stoop ...in Holland, Maria Graff ...in Germany, Setsuko Shimazaki ...in Japan, Annette Gôl ...in Denmark, etc..
